This page will document the
growing up years from birth until High School.
- Born August 18,1952 in
Person Memorial Hospital to Mary Powell King and Randolph Rayford King.

This is my mother's family
Cotton Powell, Shorty Powell, Hughlo Powell
Davis and my mother, Mary King
-
We lived in a garage apartment located behind what is now the Pizza Hut in
Roxboro. The house was eventually moved to Lamar street behind the
post office but is now a single level house.
- I think I was about 6 years
old when we moved to where my parents now live on S. Morgan Street. I
never lost touch with the old neighborhood and some of my best friends are
still good friends - Ray Johnson, Bruce Wrenn and others came from this
area. I would ride my bicycle from a mile away to see my old buddies.
- There's not much that comes
to mind during the school years prior to High School. Just normal
stuff kids do. I do remember a 7th grade teacher named Ms. Schrader
who could out kick any of us in football - she was neat. Also Ms.
Andrews - she would tell Joey Stevens that he should pay attention and learn
his math or he would be in here shaving and paying social security - (he was
already shaving and after staying extra time in a couple of previous grades,
he could be already paying social security). I think Joey ended up
being some type of doctor or related field - go figure.
- About this time, I had the
opportunity to attend the North Carolina Advancement School in Winston
Salem, NC. This was the first time I had spent extended time away from
home. The experience taught me that I had a lot more creative and
innovative skills than I was using in public school. When I returned
home, I set a higher pace in learning and advancing in school. It was
a good experience that I still remember today.
This where we currently live
on Hyco Lake - thanks to Bonnie's brother and father, my father and many
more who helped us build our current home on the lake.
