I will talk about the High School Years.
- 1969 - 1971 I was a
typical High Schooler for the most part. I was a bandmember since
mid-school and continued in HS. I also continued by favorite sport of
tennis while in HS. My claim to fame was once playing John Lucas
(Former Pro Basketball player) while in pre-high school. I won a few
games but the match was pretty much his. This was before the HS even
had a tennis team and the team I played on was a County Team John Eggelston
started. I went on to letter in Tennis and tried wrestling for a while
until I got hurt when another player picked me up and dropped me on my
neck/back! The doctor said no more wrestling.
- I had some really good
teachers in HS and made friends with most of them - some I can recall just
like it was yesterday - Mrs. Brown, still goes to my church, Mrs. Miles,
Mrs. Giles, Mr. Cannon, Ms. Nichols, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Puryear, Mr. Gadison.
I wasn't a straight A student but I did make the B honor roll several
times. Most of the science and math came easy, I had to work at
history and geography - Latin helped me in English as well as Mrs. Brown.
- After HS, it was 1971 and
the Vietnam war was still going on, so I enrolled at PCC in electronics - my
lifetime passion. My draft lottery number was drawn and I missed the top
ten by one, so this meant it was eminent that I would visit Uncle Sam in one
way or another so I joined the National Guard. I didn't have much time
to go to PCC because they ask (ordered) me to report to Fort Dix New Jersey
on Dec. 26, 1971. So the day after Christmas, I was boarding a bus in
Danville headed for the coldest, unforgiving place I have ever been.
18 hours later I arrived at Fort Dix, N.J. Nine weeks later I left headed
for Aberdeen Proving Grounds Maryland. This is where I received
training in welding and metallurgy. It was something I would continue
to use the rest of my working life and continues today. Six years
later, I would leave the NCNG as a Spec. 5 and unit leader.

Vince Yarboro, Frank Shotwell, me and Glen Ragan.
Glen and Vince both left us at early ages - "Big-un" (Vince) was a
good friend and Glen was a co-worker at CP&L.
